Advisor Dan Drake & Specialist Lisa Thompson
are studying the distribution & movement of threatened coho salmon in
the Shasta River, near Yreka. Fish are trapped in five representative
reaches to examine distribution relative to factors such as flow,
temperature, & dissolved oxygen. A passive integrated transponder (PIT)
tag is inserted into the body cavity of captured fish. In 2005 a PIT
antenna was operated in a side-channel occupied by coho salmon. In 2006 two
larger antennas will be installed in the upper & lower river to assist
with monitoring required for agricultural incidental take permits.
