Fish in Rangeland Streams: Fish Habitat Use & Diversions in Cow Creek, Shasta County

Water from Cow Creek is diverted toward the entrance of an irrigation water ditch.

Summary:

Advisor Larry Forero & Specialists Lisa Thompson & Ken Tate studied the distribution of fish in Cow Creek from 2003 - 2005 in relation to environmental factors such as flow, temperature, dissolved oxygen, cover, & pool characteristics in rangeland & forested areas. Cooler, higher elevation, deeper pools were more likely to have rainbow trout in summer, although trout also used lower elevation pools in spring & fall. In spring 2006 they will study unscreened irrigation diversions to see whether juvenile Chinook salmon migrating to the ocean accidentally enter diversions.
