Lisa C. Thompson

This site is maintained by a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist, Dr. Lisa Thompson. She is based at UC Davis and can be contacted at lcthompson@ucdavis.edu. She provides scientific information about California’s anadromous and inland fish to the people of California, including resource agencies, watershed groups, commercial and recreational fishing industries, agricultural industries, consumers, youth, policy makers, tribal groups, other non-governmental organizations, and academic colleagues. This information is communicated in person through presentations, workshops, training sessions, and individual consultations, and indirectly, through this web site, publications, newsletters, computer software, audio-visual materials, and other reference materials.

Dr. Thompson also conducts applied fisheries research designed to resolve significant issues, knowledge, or data gaps related to California fish. A main goal of this research is to develop improved management practices, and to facilitate the adoption of these practices. Her research interests include: adaptive management of anadromous and inland fish populations; population dynamics modeling; impacts of dams and other water diversions on aquatic ecosystems; food webs in rivers, lakes and reservoirs; and terrestrial-aquatic linkages in watersheds. This site is maintained by a UC Cooperative Extension specialist dedicated to inland and anadromous fisheries for the entire state of Califormia.

The information and images provided on this site are under the copyright of their creators and the University of California. These materials may be downloaded free of charge and used for educational purposes only, not for profit. We ask that photos used be credited to the photographer and to the University of California. If you wish to use any of these materials please consult the UC ANR copyright page. If you have any questions about copyright issues, please contact the fisheries extension specialist.

If you have a picture of a fish that you would like to donate to the site we will gladly accept it. Please send your photo to the fisheries extension specialist. Each picture should include your name, common name of the fish (sub-species name if known), where you found the fish, and when the photo was taken. Please keep in mind that we are looking for images that can act as an aid in identifying California’s varied fish species and it is therefore important to have the majority of the species’ distinguishing features (fins, mouth, coloration, etc.) visible and undamaged. If your image is used you will be credited below the image. Large format photos are fine. We will post a compressed version of the photo of the species page.  We will also place a full-sized version of the photo in the California Fish Photo Library, (in the UC Agriculture and Natural Resources Respository), which is also open to the public.
